What are your career choices?Time for money vs business ownerThere are three basic situations for most people:
EmployeeEmployees come in many forms from shop floor worker, junior manager, senior manager or even executive. What do they have in common? They all sell their time for money and work for a boss! They do not control their activity but have to do whatever the job requires for them. Executives often believe that they have authority but they still have to do whatever their boss tells them to do. Even the chaiperson of the board is answerable to the other board members so they are not free even if it might appear that way. They are paid a certain amount per year, month, week or day but however it is calculated they are effectively selling time for money. They can earn more money per hour but the number of hours in a day is fixed for all of them. Time is their limiting factor.ProfessionalsThis looks at the outset like a much better situation. This group includes accountants, doctors, lawyers and so on. At first glance it looks like they have moved a long way from being employees but have they? In many cases they do not have a boss but they still are only being paid for what they do. In other words they are still selling time for moneyBusiness OwnersThis time the situation changes. This group is not working for a boss; they are the boss! This may sound a bit better but they no longer receive a guaranteed income but have to make their living out of the profits that their business generates. This is both good and bad news. They lose the guarantee of a salary but on the other hand there is no limit to how much they can earn in a period. This is the realm of the entrepreneur. This is just about the only way for most ordinary people to make a significant of money. In fact this is how you can make unlimited amounts of money. Let's consider the different types of business ownersSmall Business: this group has typically small premises, a small number of employees and a small investment. Each of these creates it own workload on the owner but it is manageable by the business owner. They might consider each of these areas to be a headache but that is the price of doing business. Large Business: just the same as the small business but everything is bigger so the business owner employs even more people to manage the other employees, the premises and the investment. In other words the headaches just get bigger. Franchises: What is a franchise? In summary it is a way to kick start a business by taking on a recognized name and establishes business concept in order to get your small business started. The drawback is that it costs a lot of money to by the franchise so for the early years the main priority is to service the debt i.e. you have to make money to pay off the capital and interest used to acquire the franchise. In all other respects they are small businesses with all th associated headaches. Home business: Here things are very different. There are no additional premises, no additional employees and a very small investment. This all translates into very few headaches! Now this looks very promising but maybe the possible income is also very small. We need to look at the different types of home business to see if that is the case. Different Types of Home BusinessesHome businesses can take many forms and sometimes are misleading in that they are still selling time for money. These include envelope stuffing, will making services, data entry and typing amongst others. These are work at home jobs not businesses. If you stop doing the activity the income drops to zero in all cases. A home business, on the other hand allows the business owner to build a business and then look to get repeat business. This is the essential ingredient of growing a business which has increasing goodwill as past efforts lead to new activity and sources of income. This is what increases the value of the business. A series of one off deals, however lucrative, do not create an equity in the business as there is no repeat business. This does not mean that you cannot make money by doing them, but you are only as successful as your next deal. Many people sell items on the internet through very successful sites but although they are trading they are not building up the repeat business in most cases. Let's consider the implications of repeat business: if you continue to market your products in order to find new customer you have both the new business (just like people doing one off deals) PLUS the repeat business from the previous month or so. So if you look after your customers and keep adding to them the business grows. This growth may then allow for more people to be employed to service this larger customer base and so on.But as you start to add employees you are losing one of the great benefits of a home business, namely it's simplicity. So how do we overcome that? Network Marketing! (or Multi Level Marketing as it is sometimes called).
