Tips
for success when starting your home business
All
network marketing opportunities share these steps in
common
These
are the nine tips that will help you to launch your home business
successfully.
1. BE A PRODUCT OF THE
PRODUCTS:
It is essential when you start your own home
business that you use and be seen to use the products.
If they are not good enough for you why should anyone else buy
them? It is not just using the
products that matters but developing a passion and enthusiasm for
them. Once you have got this
enthusiasm it is easy for it to be communicated in the way you talk
about them to potential
customers and distributors.
It will be a massive boost to your business development and without
it failure is close to hand.
This can be the difference between two equally hard working,
equally smart people when it
comes to success.
2. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF
COMPANY TRAINING:
All network marketing organisations arrange meetings
and other training events. These may be
conference calls or recorded messages which have be laid on for the
development of your business;
take advantage of them.
You need to become an expert in your field and just as with every
other endeavour you need
to learn as much as possible as fast as possible. If you have
something informative to say about
your business and an effective way of communicating it people will
listen. If you are not informed
and have not learned how to communicate it your chance of success
falls dramatically.
Meetings are essential. Attendance not only provides you with
training but you will also be
surrounded by positive people who are all trying to achieve in
exactly the same business as
yourselves. You will leave the meeting with renewed enthusiasm,
confidence and belief all
which combine to build a successful business.
Some people attend one or two meetings and then wonder why things
don't work out for them.
The successful people always attend and success leaves clues.
Home working can be lonley so attending the meetings is a great way
to build friendships as well
as learn about the business. Keep attending. Those who stop
attending tend to just fade away.
3. ORGANISE YOUR HOME
OFFICE:
If you are to work from home you
need a dedicated space that you can use as your office.
This could be a converted bedroom or dining room or even space in
your bedroom.
You want to have an area that you can be apart from the family so
that when you are trying
to work you do not get distracted by television and other family
activities. This is important
as much of the activity in network marketing occurs in the evening
when customers and
distributors alike have returned home after their day job.
Take some time to get a decent chair (this is not a luxury) and
desk space with your PC,
printer and internet connection conveniently placed. You need
adequate filing and storage
and a quiet place from where you can make telephone calls etc. If
you use web cams make
sure the space behind you is neutral and tidy.
With regard to the telephone please make sure that you answer it
rather than a small child.
It may be cute for grandparents to hear their grandchildren answer
the phone but it does
not convey a good impression to potential customers or
distributors.
You may be working alone but you are the front line of the company
you work for so you
want to convey a professional image at all times. Whenever possible
answer the telephone
in person rather than leave it to an answering machine. Network
marketing is about person
to person contact so keep it
personal.
4. BUSINESS
ATTITUDE:
You have started a home business
so adopt a business attitude. Just because you are at
home does not mean that you do not have just as much commitment to
your job as an
employee. Start work at the same time every morning and don't just
take the morning off.
Your the boss but expect of yourself what you would expect of
someone you hired.
You need to decide how much time you can spend on your home
business and then put
it in a diary with the specific hours you plan to spend. This time
is than sacrosanct (red time).
If a neighbour asks you to help mend the fence that was damaged in
a storm say no!
Help them outside of red time. They would not expect you to come
home from an office to
help and they need to understand your office just happens to be in
your home.
If you do not respect your business nobody else will. It is not a
hobby.
5. GOALS AND TARGET SETTING:
All
successful businesses run with goals and targets. These are
typically called budgets
and the sales force have clear targets to meet in order for the
company to achieve it's goals.
You are no different. When you started your business you did it for
a reason. In 99% of
cases your goal was to earn some more money. Just because
you work from home with
your own business does not make you immune to good business
practice.
Why are targets important? A dream is something that happens at
some time in the future.
Turn your dreams into goals!
The difference is that a goal is quantified (how much money you
want) and by when.
Both quantity and time need to be clearly defined.
Once these have been defined you can then work out how much
activity you need to do
to achieve these goals.
This activity can then be expressed in terms of weekly and monthly
activity so that you
know how much you need to do in the time you have available.
When you come to review your results against these targets you are
now in a postion to
take corrective action if you have missed your targets. It is this
corrective action that makes
people with goals and targets more successful than those without.
People dislike having
targets in case they miss them but without them how will you know
if you are on course
to achieve your goals and, therefore, dreams? Also, these are your
targets so only you know
if you have missed them and you are not going to fire yourself are
you! The corrective
action would either be to do more or to do things differently until
you start to hit your targets.
The only other alternative is to reduce your goals and therefore
your dreams.
Don't take
the easy way out and tell yourself that you don't need targets and
goals. That is
just an excuse to allow you to underperform and risk failure. They
are your dreams so don't steal them from
yourself.
6. DAILY METHOD OF
OPERATION (DMO):
You have now got your office
sorted out, have clear goals and targets and enthusiasm for
the
products and some knowledge of your business so it is time to get
to work!
The best piece of advice I can give you on this is to use a
diary with a page per day. It does
not matter if you use a hard copy or an electronic diary, whichever
works best for you but have
a clear idea of what you will be doing at any given time during the
week.
I suggest you start the week putting red time into your diary. Red time is sacrosanct but is not
just your business activity but other things that have to get done
at
specific times. Doctors appointments, getting the car serviced,
shopping, domestic chores,
exercise and the school run are all things that have to get done so
plan for them. When working
from home it is very easy for each activity to take that little bit
longer and if you are not
disciplined with your time you will find you run out of it!
Once you have planned your week, each evening you should plan the
next day in detail so that
if Mary asks you to help fix the fence you can tell her when you
are available. Discipline with
your time will enable you to acieve a lot in the time you do
have.
This is a characteristic of successful people so copy
them.
7.
ATTITUDE:
Attitude
determines everything. If you have a positive attitude towards
everything you do you
will be successful. It is never easy to feel positive all the time
so take steps to help you along the
path. Surround yourself with positive people (company meetings are
a good place to find those)
and avoid the negative people. They will steal your dreams and
bring you down.
Use of language. When asked "How are you" don't say "not
bad" but "I feel great" or something
positive like that. "Not bad" is two negative words which when put
together are supposed to
mean "good" or "ok". If today someone responds to your question
with "I feel really fantastic"
it draws you towards them. You become atractive so they want to
speak with you.
This must be a good way to start talking to potential customers or
distributors.
We all
have friends who when asked always list at great length their
latest catalogue of woes
and we can't wait to either put the phone down or get away. Be the
opposite. Attract people
towards you by your positive attitude, use of language and
enthusiasm.
"The only difference between hard work and an adventure is
attitude" Allison Crisp
8. ORGANISE YOUR BOOKKEEPING:
This does not have to be
complicated. Keep two shoe boxes; one for all your receipts and
one
for all your expenses. In addition open a separate bank account
just for your home business.
If you give a local accountant the two shoe boxes and the bank
statements etc they will be able
to prepare you accounts for you once a year so that you can take
advantage of the tax benefits
rather than have problems from the tax man. This will not cost a
great deal of money but unless
you know what you are doing it is important to get some
advice.
9. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Whatever
your background and whatever your experience you will be amazed how
you will
change as a person as your career develops. When speaking with
successful Network Marketers
it is always noticeable how similar they are in terms of being
positive, always having time for new
people and wanting to share their experience with them. They may
not have started this way but
they have evolved into the people they are. Why not accelerate you
development by reading some
personal development books or listening to recordings. They are
both inspirational and will assist
in you developing the characteristics of success.
