Fitting a Home Based Business into Family Life
A huge percentage of
people looking for a reputable home based business are doing so for
family reasons.
It could be that they resent paying someone else vast sums of money to look after their children or it could be that they are fed up with trying to juggle work with family life and succeeding at neither. But it's not only children that cause concern. Many of the people we have looking at our work from home opportunity are carers of elderly parents or other relatives and they are struggling to give their loved ones the attention they deserve whilst at the same time earning enough money to live on.
Working from home can solve a lot of
these problems but it is important to understand that your
home
business needs to be worked at diligently. If you treat it like a hobby, you will get a hobby-sized return from it which will probably result in disappointment.
How to go about fitting
Your Family around your Home Business:
You need to timetable your day. The first thing to look at is the amount of time you have to give to your new home based business. Write down all your 'immovables'. These are things that you must do on a daily basis. These might include taking the children to school, visiting an elderly relative, helping out at Church, your existing work commitments etc. On top of that you need to give time to what is important to you. For example I do not generally work between 6pm and 7.30pm. I want to have time to talk to my children after they come back from school and to cook a nutritious supper which we eat around the table as a family. Failure to plan your time is probably one of the biggest challenges and until you have got this taped it will
be difficult to be successful in your business and personal life.
With our team we have found that
this advice is one of the most important ingredients of success.
We have found that it is far better
to timetable my day with allowances for my family and household
tasks
than to just hope that everything will somehow get done. That thinking is a sympton of your old chaotic life, not the new you!
It is also important to give your
family 'chunks' of time. Many of us who are on the fast track feel
that we
should be working all day, every day. However, in reality, that doesn't work. Firstly, your relationship with your family suffers because you never see them and secondly your business suffers because you never look at it with fresh eyes. In our family we have a policy that Sunday is reserved for family. The morning is spent catching up on tasks in the house and garden that we can all do together, the afternoon is spent on anything we like - it could be swimming, playing badminton or just watching a film but the important thing is that we do it together and in the evening we all cook a family meal together. That means that even if the week ahead gets out of control, and with four different people that often happens, we have caught up with each other and cemented our relationship.
It took
Charles and I nearly two years to understand the importance of
giving enough time to ourselves and
our children. Since we initiated our Sunday policy the relationship we have with each other and with our children has taken on a new meaning. After all, one of the main reasons why we are working at home is to spend time with each other and our children. We don't use family as an excuse for not getting on with our work, in fact we are probably more productive than before but neither do we use work as an excuse not to nurture our relationships.
